Desiree Perez Discusses Gender Equality In Music
It’s no secret that the music industry is a male-dominated industry, but it’s never too late for things to change. Desiree Perez is the CEO of Roc Nation. She has seen first hand how difficult working in the music industry can be for women. Most people would believe that by now women and men are treated equally in the industry, but that’s not the case. Gender inequality has gone on for many years and one of the keys to fixing this problem is addressing it. Thousands of music execs were surveyed and women made up less than 40% of those execs. When it comes to women of color the numbers are even worse. Out of 70 top music companies, Desiree Perez is only one of two women who hold top positions. Gender inequality is something that affects every aspect of the music industry from top execs to the artists. According to a study that was done on equality in the music industry only 12% of songwriters were women.
Desiree Perez understands the challenges of working in a male dominated industry all too well, but she also believes that there are a few steps that leaders of the music industry can take to make this change. The first is to make a way for women to gain opportunities for leadership positions. The music industry has plenty of resources available for men who want to advance their careers. Most of the execs are men and they tend to offer top positions to other men, and they don’t acknowledge women or people of color. Her second tip is to offer mentorship to women in leadership positions. Her last tip is to address sexual harassment and ageism. She believes that there should be policies in place to address these issues that women face in the industry.
