Alliance Defending Freedom

Alliance Defending Freedom is a nonprofit legal organization that protects Americans’ right to live out their faith freely. We do this by advocating for religious liberty, the sanctity of life, and marriage and family. We’re also involved in education and advocacy on the Abolitionist Approach.

Our History

Alliance Defending Freedom was founded in 1994 by a Christian ministry lawyer concerned about the increasing intolerance toward religious expression. It was initially known as Alliance Defense Fund. ADF has grown to be a staff of over 800 in seven offices across the country, including two international offices. ADF has been involved in cases representing people from all 50 U.S. states and countries as diverse as Russia, Japan, Israel, and Kenya.

Our Vision

Alliance Defending Freedom aims to reestablish a legal framework in the United States that protects people—especially Christians—from coercive efforts to undermine their faith, free speech, and right to live out their beliefs in public. We’re seeing progress. After nearly a decade of legal battles, we’re optimistic about new laws protecting freedom of conscience and expression. And we’re committed to providing legal counsel and other assistance to defend these freedoms.

Here are a few of the ways Alliance Defending Freedom works to achieve its mission: ADF attorneys work in all 50 U.S. states, Puerto Rico, and internationally to protect the right of people to freely live their faith at work, in the community, and at school. We educate millions of Americans about the importance of religious freedom. We litigate cases at the trial and appellate level and in state legislatures to restore legal protections for life, marriage, and religious liberty. We inform public officials—like judges—about the importance of protecting religious freedom.
